Regional Winners

North West Winner - Halona Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Halona is pioneering a new service that uses activities with  horses as a tool for personal learning. They work with young people with challenging behaviour who are in the care system. These young people who have experienced high levels of abuse and neglect, do not respond to traditional 'talk' therapy.

North East Winner - Mango Mutt

Launched certified organic dog treats in March 2006, packaged in biodegradable cellophane bags and available in four delicious flavours made from human grade ingredients and baked to order by Sarah Manby within our own Yorkshire kitchen with fresh local ingredients wherever possible. Mango Mutt has championed natural products and adopted green and ethical policies in dog welfare.

 London Winner - Zavkhan

Zavkhan run horse riding tours in Mongolia.  Their aim is to make a living, but to do it in an ethical way that benefits the local people too. We had to not only convince clients to go to Mongolia, but also to set up all the tourism infrastructure from scratch (there is no other tourism in the area). Despite the challenges, we gave people their 'trip of a life time', and they absolutely loved it. We are looking forward to growing the business next year.

 Scotland Winner - Scotland’s Best

This is a group of 96 small B and B’s throughout Scotland established 10 years ago.  They are all 4 or 5 Star graded and take no more than 6 guests. All the work of organising the group, producing 25,000 annual brochures, advertising and distribution of the brochure, liaising with a web designer and keeping things going is done by a committee of 10 members. It's quite an undertaking as none of us has any previous knowledge or experience and we all are busy with our individual businesses.  Unfortunately none of us has the time, the skill or the expertise to get media coverage and it is frustrating to be unable to tell more people about us as we know there are lots of potential guests out there looking for the sort of friendly, welcoming, top quality accommodation which we offer.

South East Winner - Go With The Gobbies

Successful trials in schools and optometric practice of this new, holistic method for helping those with reading difficulties has not been taken up by the media. The patented reading and writing aids co-ordinate with stories containing a moral message, and interest and fun combine with the learning-through-play toy. Co-ordination exercises complete this new. holistic approach to improving quality of life for the individual which ultimately benefits society as a whole.

South West Winner - Tonic Attack

Wheatgrass is widely considered as one of the best sources of nutrition available. As with anything worthwhile, it is not obtained without considerable effort and attention to detail.  Many people have traditionally resorted to processed forms of wheatgrass such as pills and powders in order to avoid the chore and time involved in growing and juicing their own. Until recently this was the only alternative as ordinary juice only has a shelf life of one day. Tonic Attack wheatgrass is grown in OceanSolution™. This special solution, derived from the oceans, the largest sustainable resource in the world, contains all of the nutrients the wheatgrass needs. This extends the shelf life of our product to a whopping fourteen days, enabling us do all the hard work, and you to reap all the benefits.

Midlands Winner - Premier Furniture Restoration

Premier Furniture Repair and Restoration is unique because it’s a new- generation company with new and advanced products and technique, ranging its service from furniture repair and restoration to vehicle interior restoration/recolouring. Now, private customers and businesses can save thousands of pounds, having restored the damage on their vehicle seats or furniture instead of a complete replacement.

Also Shortlisted and recipients of a free Buzz Factory PR Brainstorm ...

 North East - Visitation Productions

First performance in Britain by a British theatre company of Japanese Kyogen Comedy Theatre (performed in English) as part of the 2006 Festival of Japan.

South West - Millichamp and Hall

Millichamp and Hall make cricket bats (and other cricket equipment) - last year they supplied three different bats to three different players from the same batch in the same week.  Two of the players were professional cricketers playing first class cricket for Surrey CCC at the Oval. Both professionals scored a century in their first innings with their new bats. An incredible performance from a small local batmaker and priceless PR for the local press and maybe wider.

 Scotland - Precision Saw Milling

I set my business up in May 2006 I am a woman in a man’s world as I have a forestry business.  My core product is Mobile Saw milling and my add-on services are timber supplies, tree surgery and fencing all types commercial and domestic. Since I have started I have been entered into the Highlands and Islands business awards for best new comer, I am about to host and MSP for a day where he will be working with me to see the daily business constraints I have, I am about to expand my business into biomass i.e wood fuel where i am getting grants from local government and other sources, I have now got property to base my sawmill and I am getting training to become a forest wood school leader.
